Are electric kick scooters known only as Electric Kick Scooters?

Electric kick scooters are also known as escooters. This is commonly found in the literature and bylaws of cities that have implemented escooter guidelines.

Do electric kick scooters have a hub motor and battery?

Yes, electric kick scooters have a hub motor and battery. There are different types of motors that can be used but the hub motor is the most common type. It is called hub because the motor is in the hub of the wheel, usually the back wheel, but they can also be in the front wheel. Brushless hub motors are the newest type available, making them more energy-efficient. Longer range, quicker acceleration, and good hill climbing are characteristic of the hubbed motor.

The battery used in electric kick scooters is usually lithium types. Common is lithium-ion, a well established battery that has good overall charging and established life cycles. Typical battery cycles are 400-1000, and then they start to loose their charging effectiveness, until eventually they won't be able to sustain your electric scooter no matter how charged it is. The good news is that you can replace the battery on your kick scooter.

Can i kick start an electric kick scooter with a dead battery?
Yes, you can. Without the battery, you can ride the scooter like any scooter. Use one leg to balance yourself on the scooter and grab the handlebars, then, use your other leg (usually your strongest) to push the scooter.

Do I have to remove the battery to charge it?
If your electric kick scooter has a non removable type battery, then you simply plug it into your home's wall outlet with the charging cable provided for your scooter. Or if your out and about, and somewhere where there is access to a wall outlet, you can charge it also. Some e scooters have 'removable' batteries, which means you can swap out batteries if you want (2 or more). To remove the battery, you lift the top off the protected tubular next to the scooter's handlebars. There is usually an easy grab attached. Then simply charge it at your convenience. This type of battery is great for commuters who want quick access to their scooter at peak times.

Kick scooter how to ride?
It takes little time to learn to ride your electric kick scooter, however, certain protocol should be followed to ensure your safety and those around you.

Firstly, turn on your electric scooter by initializing the display. Each model differs, but usally push and hold to power on.
Tip: Several brands have a scooter app, which includes a riding tutorial which must be completed before you can access all the speed modes. Slow mode is the default mode which is less than 10mph.
Before riding, check the scooter tires, (especially air tires), your scooter manual will state the proper air to have in the tires. If you have air tires, you should buy a portable tire inflator, as your tires should be checked often.

To begin, put your foot on the pedal(aka - the deck or platfrom as it is known), then grab the handlebars with both hands, then use your other foot to give yourself a push. Make sure your scooter is pointing forward not to the side.
Tip: When placing your foot on the pedal deck make sure you put it moreso forward to leave room for your other foot once you get moving along. Not all kick scooters have wide decks, so you might have to put your feet one forward and one behind. If you do have one with a wide deck you can put both feet together side by side which is nice too.

Once you get moving, you can then use the throttle (on the right side of handlebars usually) to engage your motor. Don't overdo the throttle, because this can jerk the scooter and you also, which can cause you to loose your balance, and fall from the scooter.
Slowly turn the throttle or throttle mechanism (scooters vary on throttle type), which will slowly move you and the scooter. Tip: Practice your scooting with no one around, no cars, and no people. Picture yourself in a large empty parking lot. Tip: To engage the scooter motor you must be moving at a speed of 1.8 to 2+ mph. There are some kick e scooter models that do not require a kick start but those are usually higher end priced.

Once your moving you'll want to practice braking. This is easy to do. Just use the brake lever on the front handlebar, usually on the opposite side of the throttle, and, some models have two brake levers. Move your scooter at a slow speed to practice braking, then increase your speed and practice. This way, you will have a good idea of how long it takes to stop your scooter based on the speed your traveling.

When you stop your scooter, turn it off from the display, and engage your kickstand. If your scooter has an app available, use that to lock your scooter. And, remember, safety first. Wear your helmet; elbow and knee protective pads are recommended, especially if your a new Electric Kick Scooter owner.

Electric kick scooter pneumatic vs solid tires.
A pneumatic tire, whether tubed or tubeless, provides a more cushy type ride, and often kick scooters with these types of tires do not have suspension because the pneumatic tire is sufficient at providing a smooth ride. The solid tire is made of a rubber compound and does not provide a cushy ride like the pneumatic tire. Kick scooters with these type of tires often have a front or rear suspension, or both. Overall, a solid tire, has a longer life, and is maintenance free, except for regular wear. The tubed and tubeless pneumatic tire, has a higher maintenance, and more prone to being replaced due to road debris and mishaps. Choosing one or the other would be a matter of preference based on your riding conditions. For a smooth ride choose the tubed pneumatic tire(tire with tube in the tire), and for the least maintenance and also a smooth ride; choose the pneumatic sealed puncture proof tire(just a tire, pre sealed, no tube).
